Fall of Constantinople (1453)
On 29 May 1453 the Ottoman army of Mehmed II took Constantinople after a 53-day siege, ending the Byzantine Empire, which had lasted more than a thousand years as the eastern continuation of Rome.
On the map, the change is small in area and large in consequence. By 1453 Byzantium held little beyond the city and the Morea. The Ottoman state now controlled the straits between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and Constantinople became its capital.
